Adobe Commerce migration
OUXP moves Adobe Commerce (Magento) stores – on Adobe’s cloud or self-hosted – to Shopify Plus, planned around your license renewal so you can launch before you sign another term. Our engineers were building enterprise Magento stores before Shopify Plus existed. Data and order history move intact, each Adobe B2B feature and service is mapped to a Shopify feature, an app or a custom build, and a 301 map covering every URL pattern is live at launch.
Adobe Commerce is a capable platform. Most teams we talk to leave over what surrounds it: a license that rises with revenue, upgrade deadlines on Adobe’s cloud, and the engineers it still takes to run it.
01
Adobe prices Adobe Commerce by revenue tier and doesn’t publish rates; licenses typically run $22,000–$125,000+ a year (industry estimate). Sell more, and the next renewal quote rises with you.
02
Signing commits you to another license term, and to the upgrades and integrator retainers that come with it. Check your contract’s notice deadline: that’s when the decision is due, and it can fall before the renewal date.
03
Standard support for Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 ended on August 11, 2026. On Adobe’s cloud, old releases now have enforcement dates: June 1, 2027 for 2.4.4 and 2.4.5, and June 1, 2028 for 2.4.6 and 2.4.7. After that date Adobe stops maintaining the environment and may suspend its traffic, so upgrades aren’t optional.
04
Under Adobe’s shared responsibility model, applying Adobe’s patches, custom code, extensions and security incident response stay with you. Many Adobe stores keep a specialist integrator on retainer to cover them.
05
On Adobe Commerce Cloud, Adobe asks you to request a temporary upsize from its support team before an expected traffic spike. On Shopify Plus, peak capacity is Shopify’s job.
06
Moving to Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service means a new storefront on Edge Delivery Services and rewriting modules that run inside the application to run outside it, with App Builder and API Mesh. If customizations get rebuilt either way, compare both destinations.

When staying on Adobe Commerce is the right call
Stay when Adobe Experience Cloud – AEM, Target, Real-Time CDP – runs through how you sell, when your B2B buyers depend on multi-step approval chains, negotiated quotes and credit limits, or when an in-house engineering team ships custom Adobe modules every week. If that describes your store, the free migration assessment says so.
Delivery takes 10–24+ weeks. Start 6–9 months before your Adobe renewal date, and the decision, a fixed quote, the build and a launch away from peak trading all fit inside the term you’ve already paid for.
A free written assessment within 2 business days: platform verdict, timeline band, cost band and risk flags. No store access needed.
A deeper pass with read-only access under NDA turns the band into a fixed price and timeline – in hand before your renewal or notice deadline.
The seven delivery steps below, from discovery to a full launch rehearsal, while your Adobe store keeps trading.
Cut over on a date agreed away from peak trading, with time to monitor before the Adobe term ends.
Renewal less than 6 months away? Request a free migration assessment anyway. The assessment tells you plainly whether a launch before that date is realistic – and if it isn’t, how long a bridge term you’d need. We won’t rush a cutover to meet it.
Typically $60,000–$200,000, with a fixed price agreed before work starts.
Near $60,000: a single site whose catalog fits Shopify’s product model, with standard B2B or none. Toward $200,000 and 24+ weeks: B2B quote and approval workflows, ERP and PIM integrations, several websites or store views, and Adobe services such as Live Search to replace.
Data moves with its history. Modules, Adobe services and custom code can’t transfer between platforms, so each one is replaced, rebuilt or retired. Discovery inventories all of it, and you sign off the list before the build starts.
Internal IDs don’t carry over between platforms; the relationships do – each order with its customer and products, each company with its buyers and locations. Old order and customer numbers that finance or your ERP rely on are kept for reference.
Passwords can’t move – Shopify can’t read Adobe Commerce password hashes – so returning customers sign in with an emailed one-time code from launch day. Saved cards move only where your payment provider supports a token migration to Shopify; we confirm that, and any data held in third-party services, in discovery.
Catalog restructuring, URL patterns and the checkout rebuild work as they do for any Magento-based store – our Magento migration page covers them. These four problems are specific to Adobe Commerce, so we scope them before quoting.
How we solve it
Adobe’s documented database export, ece-tools db-dump, puts the store into maintenance mode while it runs, and Cloud snapshots can’t be downloaded. So we agree an off-peak window for the full export, run every pilot import from that copy, and pull the final delta of orders and customers through the API at cutover. The only planned pause for data work is that one agreed off-peak export; every pilot import and rehearsal runs while your store keeps trading.
How we solve it
On Cloud, redirects can sit in the Commerce URL rewrites, in .magento/routes.yaml and in Fastly edge dictionaries loaded by custom VCL snippets. We collect all three, add your store-view and filter URL patterns, and build one per-pattern 301 map – so a redirect that only existed at the CDN isn’t lost when your domain moves to Shopify. Titles, meta descriptions and structured data carry over with it. After launch we submit the new XML sitemap in Google Search Console and monitor rankings and crawl errors. Short-term movement can happen with any platform migration; the goal is to keep as much organic visibility as possible.
How we solve it
One Adobe Commerce install often runs several sites, languages and price scopes. On Shopify that becomes Markets – languages, currencies, domains or subfolders and B2B catalogs – or separate expansion stores where a region or business unit of the same brand, such as wholesale or outlet, needs its own admin. A separate brand needs its own Shopify Plus contract. Store-view values become translations and market-level content. You approve the store architecture before we build it.
How we solve it
Nothing that runs inside Adobe Commerce runs on Shopify. Pricing and promotion rules become Shopify Functions, checkout changes become checkout UI extensions, and back-office logic becomes custom apps, Shopify Flow workflows or middleware. Every module gets a decision at discovery: rebuild, replace with an app, or retire.
Each Adobe feature you use gets one decision: a native Shopify feature, an app, a custom build or retirement. These are the most common mappings; your full list is itemized during discovery.
Most Adobe B2B features map to native Shopify B2B, on every paid plan since April 2, 2026. Four don’t: approval chains inside the buyer’s company, back-and-forth quote negotiation, credit limits and deep team hierarchies – each becomes an app, ERP logic or a custom build, scoped before we quote. Shopify Plus adds unlimited catalogs assigned to companies and locations, deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment, plus Shopify Functions and checkout extensions for custom rules.
| On Adobe Commerce | On Shopify Plus |
|---|---|
| Company accounts with users, teams and roles | Companies with locations and buyers, with permissions per location; deeper team hierarchies need an app or custom logic |
| Shared catalogs | Catalogs with price lists and product publishing – more than three, or assigned per company, on Plus |
| Tier prices and quantity increments | Volume pricing and quantity rules (minimums, maximums, increments) |
| Payment on Account and company credit | Net payment terms and vaulted cards; credit limits enforced through your ERP or an app |
| Negotiable quotes | Draft orders as quotes; back-and-forth negotiation through an app or a custom build |
| Purchase orders and approval rules | Checkout to draft for your team’s review, with PO numbers; approval chains inside the buyer’s company through an app or a custom build |
| Requisition lists and quick order | A quick order list of each product’s variants in Shopify’s free themes (version 11 and later), plus reorders from order history; saved lists, SKU entry and CSV upload through an app |
Live Search and Product Recommendations run as Adobe SaaS services, so their tuning – synonyms, boost and bury rules, pinned products, recommendation units – lives outside your database. We capture it with your top and zero-result queries, recreate it on Shopify and compare results query by query before launch.
| On Adobe Commerce | On Shopify Plus |
|---|---|
| Live Search, powered by Adobe Sensei | Shopify Search & Discovery for filters, synonyms and boosts, or Algolia or Klevu for AI ranking and merchandising rules at scale |
| Product Recommendations | Shopify’s related and complementary product recommendations, or Rebuy, Nosto or Algolia Recommend |
| Visual Merchandiser and category sorting | Manual collection sorting, or the merchandising tools in your search app |
| Content staging and scheduled campaigns | Launchpad on Shopify Plus for scheduled sales, product releases and theme changes |
| Page Builder content | Theme sections and blocks, with structured content as metaobjects |
Balances customers already hold – gift cards, store credit, reward points – are reconciled before and after the import, and any mismatch is fixed before launch.
| On Adobe Commerce | On Shopify Plus |
|---|---|
| Payment Services (powered by PayPal), Stripe or Authorize.net | Shopify Payments with Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, plus PayPal – or a third-party gateway Shopify supports, such as Authorize.net, with Shopify’s transaction fee |
| Customer segments | Shopify customer segments |
| Reward points | A loyalty app such as Smile.io or LoyaltyLion, with point balances imported |
| Store credit | Shopify’s native store credit, which works with customer accounts |
| Gift card accounts | Shopify gift cards, with balances imported |
| Returns (RMA) | Shopify’s self-serve returns, or a returns app for complex exchange rules |
| Adobe Commerce Intelligence | Shopify analytics and reports, plus an export to your data warehouse if you run BI |
Every connected system is checked for a direct Shopify connector, a replacement app or a rebuild through Shopify’s APIs. For the systems that run your operations, see commerce integrations.
| On Adobe Commerce | On Shopify Plus |
|---|---|
| Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) | AEM kept as the content layer for a headless storefront on Shopify’s Storefront API, or content moved into metaobjects and the theme |
| Adobe Analytics and Adobe Target | Rebuilt on Shopify’s customer events (web pixels), which cover checkout, plus theme tags for the storefront |
| Adobe Experience Platform and Real-Time CDP | Adobe’s Shopify streaming source connector (in beta as of October 2026), or a server-side feed from Shopify webhooks |
| ERP connectors (SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite) | Celigo, Boomi or custom middleware on Shopify’s Admin API |
| PIM (Akeneo and others) | The PIM’s Shopify connector, or a custom sync into products and metafields |
| CRM (Salesforce CRM, HubSpot) | A Shopify connector for your CRM, or customers and orders synced through middleware or a custom app |
| Email and marketing platforms (Klaviyo and others) | The same platform’s Shopify integration, with lists, flows and tracking events reconnected |
| Cron jobs and message-queue consumers | Webhooks, Shopify Flow and scheduled jobs in middleware |
| Tax, shipping (ShipStation, EasyPost), 3PL and WMS | Shopify Tax or Avalara for Shopify; shipping and fulfillment providers through their Shopify integrations, or through Shopify’s APIs where a provider has none |
Common mappings, not a fixed list. Adobe and Shopify features as of October 2026; app subscriptions are billed by their vendors and are not part of the migration price.
Seven steps, each with an output you check before the next one starts. Your team’s time goes mainly into approving the maps, reviewing the build and user acceptance testing before launch.
Inventory data, modules, B2B setup, Adobe services, integrations, redirect layers and your renewal terms.
Decide where everything goes: store architecture, B2B map, attribute-to-metafield map, service replacements and the 301 map.
The theme – your current design recreated, refreshed or redesigned, as agreed in the quote – plus apps, Shopify Functions, checkout extensions and your ERP, PIM and OMS integrations, in a separate development store.
Import from the off-peak export, then compare counts, totals, companies, price lists and balances with Adobe; fix and repeat.
Test functionality, checkout, integrations, SEO and page speed, take your team’s user acceptance sign-off, then run the cutover end to end, including redirects, payments, B2B checkout and order flow into your ERP.
Freeze changes, import the final delta through the API, point the domain to Shopify (off Fastly on Adobe’s cloud) and verify checkout.
Watch orders, errors, rankings, integrations and Core Web Vitals, fix what launch surfaces and tune speed and conversion, then hand over to your team or to an OUXP retainer and maintenance plan.

Yes, if you start early enough – a renewal date is the most common trigger we see for Adobe Commerce migrations. Delivery takes 10–24+ weeks, so starting 6–9 months before the renewal leaves room for a fixed quote, the build and a launch away from peak trading. If your date is closer, the free migration assessment tells you plainly whether launching before it is realistic.
Most Adobe Commerce migrations OUXP delivers take 10–24+ weeks. A single site whose catalog fits Shopify’s product model sits at the short end. B2B approval and quote workflows, ERP and PIM integrations, several websites or store views and Adobe Experience Cloud connections push a project toward 24 weeks and beyond. The free assessment says where your store sits in that range, and a fixed timeline with milestones is agreed before work starts.
Most Adobe Commerce migrations OUXP delivers cost $60,000–$200,000. Complexity moves the price more than catalog size: B2B workflows, integrations, the number of sites and store views, Experience Cloud connections and design scope. The free assessment gives you a cost band; a deeper pass with read-only access under NDA fixes the price in writing before work starts. SEO preservation is always included.
It depends on your license tier and what keeping Adobe running costs you. Adobe Commerce licenses typically run $22,000–$125,000+ a year (an industry estimate); Shopify Plus base fees are about $27,600–$30,000 a year as of October 2026, with hosting included. At the low end of Adobe’s range, the saving comes from upgrade projects, integrator retainers and, for self-hosted stores, hosting – not the license. Very high-volume stores pay a revenue-based variable fee, commonly reported at about 0.35–0.40% of sales above roughly $800,000 a month – confirm it in writing with Shopify. See the cost comparison in the Adobe Commerce vs Shopify Plus guide.
A little. The process, timeline range and deliverables are the same as for a self-hosted install, but Cloud changes how data comes out and where redirects live. Adobe’s documented database export puts the store into maintenance mode, so we run it off-peak and take the final delta through the API. Redirects are collected from the Commerce admin, routes.yaml and Fastly before the 301 map is built.
Mostly. Company accounts, catalogs with custom pricing, volume pricing, quantity rules, net payment terms and draft-order quotes are native – on every paid Shopify plan since April 2, 2026, with unlimited company-specific catalogs and deposits on Plus. Multi-step approval chains, negotiated quote threads and credit limits aren’t native; they become an app, ERP logic or a custom build, scoped before we quote.
Live Search and Product Recommendations are replaced by Shopify Search & Discovery or a search app such as Algolia or Klevu, with your synonyms and rules recreated. Adobe Analytics and Target are rebuilt on Shopify’s customer events, AEM can stay as the content layer for a headless storefront, and Adobe Experience Platform has a Shopify source connector, in beta as of October 2026. Each system gets its own decision in discovery.
Compare it like for like. Adobe’s SaaS version also needs a new storefront on Edge Delivery Services, and modules that run inside the application must be rewritten to run outside it with App Builder and API Mesh, so your storefront and customizations get rebuilt either way. It keeps you on Adobe licensing and in the Adobe ecosystem; Shopify Plus changes the cost model and hands infrastructure to Shopify. Our free assessment includes a stay-or-go verdict, and the Adobe Commerce vs Shopify Plus guide compares both.
